Munson Healthcare Laboratory Aide III in Traverse City, Michigan


  • High school graduate.

  • Medical terminology is required or course completed within 6 months of hire

  • Basic keyboard (typing) skills of 40 wpm with <6 total errors upon assessment.

  • Previous experience with keyboard functions such as data entry/retrieval and clerical experience is required.

  • Previous experience in the medical field is preferred; knowledge of laboratory terminology and procedures is desirable.

  • Available for flexible work schedule as determined by needs of the department.


Under direct supervision of Laboratory Client Services manager, also may receive instruction from pathologists, laboratory director, laboratory managers, and/or laboratory scientists.

Has daily working contact with laboratory staff. Has daily phone contact with nursing personnel, medical staff, physician office staff, other hospitals and laboratories, and patients.

Must be self-directed, motivated and able to work independently as well as a team member.

Works in well-lit, clean surroundings, shares work space with co-workers. Uses personal computer to perform many tasks.

Stands and walks much of the shift when assigned referral specimen processing, sits much of the shift when assigned phone duties, is also required to stand and walk within the hospital grounds.

Is subject to elements of time and accuracy pressure, equipment noise, frequent interruption of activities and changing conditions which may cause re-prioritization of tasks.

Handles, processes and packages blood and body fluid specimens.


  • Prepares, aliquots, and preserves specimens for shipment to referral laboratories following established specimen processing procedures and referral laboratories' requirements. Audits order entry of referral laboratory testing.

  • Evaluates referral laboratory specimens for acceptability, determines if collection, transport, delivery and other pre-analytical requirements have been met. If requirements are not met, follows protocol (e.g. redraw process) to obtain new specimen.

  • Researches referral laboratory requirements for collection, order entry, processing, storage, shipment of specimens. Investigates fees and maintains charging key.

  • Initiates and follows the redraw process upon notification from the technical staff or identification of unacceptable specimen.

  • Maintains certification for dangerous goods shipping requirements. Follows packaging protocols for dangerous goods and biological specimens, recognizes non-compliance with regulations and makes necessary changes to bring packaging into compliance.

  • Audits and recognizes potential problems with referral lab orders for testing and/or billing, uses investigational skills to resolve problem or contacts appropriate person to assist with resolution.

  • Answers incoming telephone calls in a timely, professional and courteous manner. Determines how best to assist the inquiry or refers caller/problem to proper person or department. Receives phone reports and messages, delivers such to appropriate staff/physician/department as requested.

  • Performs post-analytical results-reporting tasks which includes, but is not limited to: phoning or faxing reports when requested, sorting daily laboratory reports for delivery to physicians' offices by the PDSS courier service, faxing daily reports, sending reports by US mail, or sending reports to system printer or fax as requested.

  • Provides accurate laboratory patient data (verbal, phone, fax, and/or printer) to authorized personnel (physician, nursing units, and physicians' office staff). Recognizes unauthorized requests and handles per protocol.

  • Accurately pronounces laboratory test names and interprets symbols commonly used in laboratory results (e.g. > or <) when providing phoned results.

  • Follows protocol to receive & record verbal orders from physicians for new testing and/or additional testing and may include specimen retrieval, order entry, labeling and/or delivery to testing department when necessary.

  • Functions as an information resource for the laboratory staff and all customers of laboratory services communicating clear and accurate specimen collection, processing, shipping and billing information for Munson Healthcare and referral laboratory testing.

  • Dispatches couriers for physician office specimen pickups, maintains accurate dispatch logs, and may be required to dispatch phlebotomists for blood draw services.

  • Follows protocols for order entry, reporting and billing for reference lab tests not included in the laboratory test compendium.

  • Performs PPD registration, laboratory order entry, specimen labeling and delivery as needed.

  • Verifies accuracy of referral laboratory invoices. Investigates and resolves billing errors or notifies appropriate staff for follow up.

  • Operates and performs minor maintenance and troubleshooting with office and specimen-related equipment (e.g., personal computers, printers, copiers, faxes, telephones, centrifuges, incubator, etc.), recognizes and reports potential problems to the appropriate person.

  • Efficiently and effectively utilizes a variety of software programs to retrieve and/or provide information/data/reports and/or enter orders as needed. Software includes the Sunquest Laboratory Information System (LIS), Mayo Access, Atlas, RightFax, GUI/Star, Application Xtender, 3M Coder, Smart Web, Outlook, Powerchart, internet and other software as necessary to perform duties.

  • Follows established procedures and policies in completing tasks and assignments with minimal direct supervision.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
