St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell and St. Joseph Mercy Brighton serve the health care needs of Livingston County residents. Services include an award-winning 24-hour emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgery, including joint replacement, a variety of diagnostic and outpatient services and over 300 physicians serving patients.


Performs venipuncture blood draws as well as performs various specimen receiving, processing, and distribution and computer order entry. Tracks specimens through appropriate computer functions to ensure that all specimens are routed accurately and in a timely manner.



  • Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients, patient care units, and physician offices.

  • Understands and supports the Mission, Vision and Guiding Behaviors of SJMHS and the Department regarding commitment to quality patient care.

  • Provides quality patient care.

  • Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies, procedures and systems.

  • Uses good judgment to decide when to contact a technologist, manager, or a pathologist as necessary.

  • Knowledge of reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals.

  • Understands laboratory requisitions and how to locate missing or incomplete information.

  • Must be able to work minimal supervision.

  • Receives orders from Power Chart. Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.

  • Performs Laboratory Information System (LIS) standard order entry including, Employee Health, Outpatient, and Body Fluid Exposure testing.

  • Prints daily CPR and resolves problems. Performs CLN for specimen tracking lists and lab-collected specimens. (CPR not required at Livingston & CCH)

  • Print patient chart reports and distributes them.

  • Logs in specimens received into LIS. Create Specimen tracking lists.

Specimen Processing

  • Determines in consultation with Med Tech acceptability of specimen (condition, timing and container type, etc.)

  • Positively ID specimens against requisitions and labels specimens with accession number.

  • Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifuging all tubes and aliquotting.

  • Processes Microbiology, body fluid, and CSF specimens including detection of discrepancies or missing sources consulting with nursing station or physician as needed.

  • Documents and follows up on problems

  • Follows test cancellation policy including when to complete EPRS and when to perform CTS (test cancellation).

  • Knows when and where to look for specimens and how and when to add tests to previously collected specimens.

  • Retrieves results from laboratory computer and reports via telephone when appropriate.

  • Maintains minimum supply levels.

  • Is familiar with reference materials and on line manuals

  • Maintains cleanliness of workstation and of section.

  • Provides input on policies and procedures.

  • Contacts courier, cab, messenger and phlebotomy team for timely specimen transport or collection.

  • This is not required of off-site. Completes MCE.

  • Assists in training new employees and students

  • Troubleshoots label and paper printers.

  • Meets hospital/laboratory educational requirements.

  • Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures). (Duty not required at Livingston & CCH)

  • Distributes samples to appropriate testing area

  • Performs venipuncture blood draw and infant heel sticks.

  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Discusses patient and hospital only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  • Assumes responsibility for of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report preventable hazards and practices immediately to management.


High School Diploma required. One year of related experience or completion of phlebotomy, MA or PCT program required.
