Description
Our Livonia Distribution Center, a 400,000 sq. ft. refrigerated facility operating 24/7, is currently seeking a Laboratory Tech IIto join the Food Safety and Quality team. In this role you will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive corporate Microbiology Program.
Full Time Day Shift- Monday-Friday; 8:30a-5:30p
Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assists with the development, implementation and maintenance of facility-wide comprehensive Microbiology Program
- Effectively and efficiently run a microbiology laboratory during the absence of the Microbiologist: maintain lab supply, equipment inventory, set media prep, swabbing, sample taking, sample preparation, incubation, testing, data input, report writing schedules, submit COA’s, train new employees, etc.
- Responsible for the maintenance of all Automated Equipment and must report to work to resolve issues during failures and malfunctions
- Input, develop and maintain laboratory databases and provide reports and analysis for management as needed
- Assist with the establishment, implementation and maintenance of Microbiology Laboratory to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 International Standard
- Serves as Technical Manager and Quality Manager Deputy for MPL Laboratory during the absence of the Microbiologist
- Maintain GLP Manual and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 program as continuously updated
- Dedicate self to providing quality test results that comply with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 International Standard, our customers’ needs and government requirements
- Assist with the establishment and maintenance of testing for incoming raw and outbound finished products
- Assist with the establishment and maintenance of microbiology programs for environmental testing (air, water, equipment)
- Assist with the establishment and maintenance of microbiology programs for testing of packaging materials
- Assist with the establishment and maintenance of microbiology programs for validation of Sanitation Program by monitoring of cleaned surfaces and ATP (Bioluminescence) testing
- Provide testing of products and samples from other operations in Canada and US
- Assist with management of Test-Hold-Release Program, and reporting of results to Management
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness to avoid cross-contamination of samples and the environment
- Maintain a highly professional audit inspection-ready environment that can viewed without prior notice
- Liaise with Food Safety, Sanitation and Operations Management and provide guidance and support on microbial issues with specific regard to validate Food-Safety Programs and verify Sanitation Programs as needed
- Discover root-cause source of bacterial problems and provides / assists in monitoring and corrective actions and establishment of preventative measures
- Assists with customer complaints around microbial issues or issues of spoilage
Continuously research, identify and evaluate best practices, and establish new resources, tools and methodologies to maximize effectiveness of the Microbiology Program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Food Science (biology, chemistry etc.), agriculture or another related field is REQUIRED
- Certification in Microbiology is preferred
- Minimum of 3-5 years of work experience in food manufacturing, food inspection (USDA) or agricultural related job
- Minimum of one to two (1 - 2) years of work experience in a laboratory setting
- Demonstrate strong laboratory skills including design of experiments, running experiments, gathering data and developing conclusions and insights
- Comprehensive knowledge of general laboratory best practices, highly proficient in ability to document and work within GLPs, SOPs, GMPs, HACCP, SSOPs & ISO/IEC 17025:2017
- Strong knowledge of local, state and federal laws and requirements to maintain compliance to all relevant statues and guiding principles (FDA, USDA, MIOSHA, OSHA, CFIA)
- Proven ability to effectively follow-up and handle multiple projects with strong personal time-management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, present information and direction, and field questions from managers, employees and external contacts
- Must be willing to work flexible hours
- Technical skills, including computer proficiency and data management
- Spanish an asset, but not a requirement
- Valid driver’s license must be maintained for occasional travel to distribution centers
- Complete a background and drug test screening
Working Conditions:
- Standard office environment. Time spent in an expansive refrigerated warehouse, where temperature averages 50°F. The background noise approaches 70 dcbs
- Capable of lifting at least 10 lbs.
- Position requires sitting, standing, walking and bending on a regular basis
- Must have manual dexterity to perform computer skills
