McLaren Health Care Orthopedic Technician in Lansing, Michigan
Responsible for fabricating, fitting, adjusting and removing mobilization and immobilization devices used in the treatment of a wide variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. This includes casts, splints, braces, traction equipment, crutches and walkers. Works with and instructs patients in caring for their injuries, and provides instructions on use of orthopedic equipment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
Working under written physician orders, applies, fits, adjusts and removes simple and moderately complex plaster and synthetic braces, casts, splints and assistive devices.
Chooses appropriate casting materials considering patient's age, activity level, cognition and ability to perform skin care.
Assists physicians in a wide range of sterile and non-sterile clinic and bedside procedures, such as removal of wires, pins, fixators, dressing or cast changes.
Explains procedures to and instructs patients and their families in the care of casts, splints and braces, dressings and other orthopedic equipment.
Reassures patients when removing casts with cast cutters or other such devices.
May set up traction and initiate proper patient teaching. Orients nursing staff to proper traction setups, maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
Maintains inventories of orthopedic equipment and supplies.
Documents procedures and instruction performed in medical record; reports observations to appropriate medical personnel.
Delivers compassionate support, attention, and assistance to patients and families.
Ensures compliance with all health care regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA.
Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
Performs other related duties as required and directed.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of orthopedic technician training and certification program.
Orthopedic Technician Certification by the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists (NAOT).
- One year of experience in a comparable medical setting.
