Job Summary: Responsible for all the sterilization of instruments, instrument trays, packs, and linen for the hospital. Responsible for collecting and re-processing soiled items and equipment for re-use. Work is performed in accordance with detailed and specific instructions or procedures. Position requires the responsibility for large quantities of supplies and the operation or maintenance of routine equipment.

Minimum Requirements: High School graduate or equivalent. Prior experience helpful. On-the-job training provided. BCLS/CPR within 6 months of hire.

Typical analysis involves gathering and interpreting information in situations where this information is generally factual and easily observable and/or requires limited interpretation and application of policies. Position requires the ability to concentrate or pay close attention to detail 80% of the work time.

Must be able to work while being exposed to infectious disease, dust, noise, fumes/vapors, sharp instruments/tools, hazardous liquids and operating machinery. Cuts and abrasions from sharp instruments are possible. Burns from sterilizing carts are possible.

Physical Efforts: Must be able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist and walk 80 -100% of the time. Must be able to hear speech, distinguish sounds and speak. Must have near vision, far vision, depth perception and be able to distinguish colors. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds.

Position Accountabilities:
  1. Operate and monitor steam sterilizers.

  2. Operate and monitor Sterrad Sterilization System.

  3. Check, assemble and wrap all instruments, instrument trays, packs and linen for sterilization.

  4. Maintain sterile supplies in correct rotation.

  5. Deliver OB C/S instruments and delivery instruments to OB.

  6. Communicate and work with other departments to enhance productivity.

  7. Assist in orienting new employees.

  8. Assemble kits for special procedures.

  9. Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the CPD.

  10. Perform call duties in rotation.

  11. Obtain computer literacy.

  12. Make hospital rounds picking up soiled pumps, suction units, equipment, and instruments.

  13. Return soiled items to decontam:

    a. Wipe down equipment and prepare it to be returned to proper area.

    b. Inspect all instruments and load them for processing in the Washer-Sanitizer. Hand clean as necessary.

    c. Make hospital rounds and frequent rounds to surgery for completed surgical cases.

    d. Instruments are processed in the Washer-Sanitizer, loading from the decontam side and unloading from the Prep and Sterile side.

    e. Decontam work area is maintained in a clean and neat manner.

  14. Follow daily/weekly/monthly duty schedule.
