Patriot Ambulance Service Inc. Wheelchair Transport Specialist in Flint, Michigan

Reports to: Field Supervisor/Operations ManagerDepartment: Operations and AdministrationHours: Variable


The Wheelchair Transport Specialist will be responsible for ensuring timely transport of patients who require the use of specially equipped wheelchair transport vehicles, and maintain patient confidentiality while following all appropriate policies and procedures as directed by Patriot Ambulance Service.

Education and Experience:

  1. Must possess a valid Michigan Chauffeur’s License.2. Must have current AHA Health Care Provider CPR or Red Cross CPR for Professionals certification.3. Must have a clear driving record. (A driving run record will be obtained as condition of employment for a driving status.)4. Must maintain all certifications and license as applicable to this position. All licenses and certifications must be kept with individual while on duty.

Language Skills:

Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence in a clear and concise manor. Ability to communicate effectively with employees within the organization.

Must have ability to communicate effectively with both medical and lay personnel in written and spoken English language.

Must be able to speak effectively and clearly via radio or telephone with, physicians, nurses, and other pertinent personnel.

Mathematical Skills:

Possess the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measuring using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Requirements:

The Employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 150 pounds. Specific visual abilities are required for this position and include the ability to focus in close, focus at a distance, see in appropriate colors, depth perception, and the ability to focus in various light. Employees will undergo a physical agility and drug-screening test prior to hiring.

The employee is regularly exposed to the following:

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide careful and safe handling of the patient while transporting to and from the wheelchair van. 2. Provide safe and efficient transport to an appropriate facility/home.3. Provide orderly transfer of care to the patient at the receiving facility/home.4. Understand and utilize the necessary components to the wheelchair van (i.e. ramps, lifts, etc.).5. Maintain response readiness for all wheelchair transports6. Collect and prioritize information regarding clients and relay information to necessary entities.7. Follow FCC regulations8. Obtain and record information for the company as well as those required by medical, legal, and health authorities. 9. Have knowledge of the vehicles medical and non-medical equipment and it’s proper use.10. Complete routine, daily checks of the vehicle’s equipment and status before every shift, complete unit checklist and manifests as required by policy.11. Required to maintain the vehicles in a clean and sanitary condition12. Required to report and relay information regarding equipment and repairs to the shift Field Supervisor/Operations Manager.13. Required to hold in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional work unless required by law to divulge such information. (see HIPAA below)14. Required to be familiar with all local standard operating procedures.15. Required to wear a complete uniform during all shifts.16. Required to work all shifts as assigned and attend all mandatory meetings.17. Required to adhere to standards of professional ethics on and off duty.18. Required to perform all duties in a courteous and professional manor.19. Required to communicate with all members of the health care and public safety agencies with courtesy and respect.20. Required to adhere to and follow current policy and procedures.

Job Responsibilities Related to Patient Privacy (HIPAA):

  1. The employee is expected to protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the Company’s privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal (and state) law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider. Failure to comply with the Company’s policies and procedures on patient privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment or of membership or association with Patriot Ambulance Service.

  2. The employee may access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete your job duties. The incumbent may only share such information with those who have a need to know specific patient information you have in your possession to complete their job responsibilities related to treatment, payment or other company operations.

  3. The employee is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding the Company’s policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of that policy to the designated Privacy Officer (The President).

  4. The employee is expected to actively participate in Company privacy training and is required to communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients and others in accordance with Company policy.
