A Research Associate (Postdoctoral researcher) position is available in the Translational NanoImmunoEngineering (T-NIE) lab of Dr. Bryan Smith in the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) and the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ). The BME department in IQ offers a unique environment for performing state-of-the-art research with many top scientists in the field, using advanced facilities. The Smith Laboratory is working at the interface of nanoengineering, imaging, and immunology to develop new strategies to therapeutically manipulate and visualize the immune system in living subjects. We develop novel nano-immunoimaging and nano-immunotherapy platforms employing a variety of experimental and computational approaches to treat and image cancer and atherosclerosis.
The projects relate primarily to pathological and inflammatory processes such as cancer and atherosclerosis. They focus on:
Immunological modulation, primarily of the innate immune system (in vitroandin vivo)
In vivo imaging, including but not limited to intravital microscopy and other optical and magnetic imaging technologies
Fabrication and characterization of novel nanoparticles
Job duties include but are not limited to:
Performing laboratory work: culture, animal handling, biochemical assays, flow cytometry, immunological assays (e.g., cytokine, differentiation/activation, and T cell response assays), handling biological characterization of nanomaterials, and microscopy, including work with mouse modelscell
Data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation.
Operating and maintaining scientific instruments.
Maintaining lab notebook and protocols.
The successful candidate will be expected to stay current on relevant literature related to the research projects, write manuscripts and funding applications such as fellowships, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.
The Smith Lab has been transitioning from the Stanford University School of Medicine and is now operational at MSU.
This position is a 12 month fixed term appointment. Renewal of position is based on funding and performance.
PhD or equivalent degree in immunology or similar field; alternatively, PhDs in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering with extensive lab training in immunology are welcome to apply.
Experience in immunology and/or imaging is required
Experience in nanotechnology/chemistry is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will have broad biological experience, including specific expertise in immunological assays such as flow cytometry (preferably high-dimensional), ELISA/ELISPOT, migration and primary T cell functional assays.
Prior experience with nanomaterials and related assays and imaging (e.g., standard confocal microscopy, animal imaging such as bioluminescence and fluorescence) is desirable, but not required.
Practical/theoretical background in immunology, molecular/cancer biology, cell biology, and laboratory animal studies are critical.
Experience in chemical synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials as well as bio-imaging using modalities such as intravital microscopy, MRI, US, optical/optoacoustic imaging are advantages.
