Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) position is open to the APRN that is trained and board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), trained and certified to medically manage patients across the lifespan. The FNP functions as a specialty care provider to patients of the Michigan State University Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders and is accountable to the HTC director.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Triage, assess, plan, evaluate and manage medical care in collaboration with the MSU adult and pediatric hematologists in the following areas: on-call, inpatient and outpatient settings including outreach and telehealth. Patient management includes but not limited to health history, medication review, physical exam, ordering and interpretation of laboratory and radiology studies, development and implementation of a treatment plan, education/counseling, ongoing monitoring and followup.

  • Provides direct patient clinical management of persons with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, and pediatric thrombosis under the supervision of pediatric hematologists,includingtheir assessment, diagnosis, and treatment including prescribing pharmacologictherapy.

  • Report accurately and concisely in-patient care rounds and problem-oriented documentation.

  • Knowledge of and documentation in multiple electronic medical record systems.

  • Collaborate with health care team in planning and coordinating care for the patient and their family through care conferences.

  • Order diagnostic studies and therapeutic measures in collaboration with the responsible physician.

  • Order medications utilizing approved MASAC guidelines, and protocols (including blood and blood protocols).

  • Determine need for and perform core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and other procedures as delegated with competency check off by the physician. Authorized to administer Basic Life Support in accordance with current CPR standards.

  • Knowledge and skill in oral and written communication including interviewing to gather medical histories; providing presentations, consultations, facilitation and documentation.

  • Knowledge and skill in case management, time management, problem solving, crisis intervention, multitasking and other organizationalmatters. Participates in regional and national meetings and camp activities.

  • Provide leadership by:

  • Assist in clinical supervision and teaching ofresidents

  • and students.

  • Participate in performance evaluations.

  • Formulate long and short-term goals based on self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses.

  • Participate as appropriate in the formulation, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures in CBCD.

  • Participate in performance and quality improvement

  • Assist in maintaining a climate conducive to open communication.

  • Develops and plans strategies to manage program growth and ensure sustainability in collaboration with the HTC Program Coordinator and Program Director.

  • Act as a role model and resource for peers, residents, and nursing staff and assists in training all staff.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, the Corporate Compliance Plan, Code of Ethics, and other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner reflecting honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

  • Serve as a role model representative of Michigan State University by demonstrating adherence to customer service standards and by respecting the privacy and confidentiality of our patients.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and respect patient, service provider, and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols defined under the HIPAA Privacy Policies.

  • Follow established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.

  • Maintains and protects patients’ rights under HIPAA privacy standards.

  • Contribute to research by:

  • Apply research findings in their practice and teaching.

  • Support and participate in research activities.

  • Promote understanding of research projects and/or findings for nursing students, staff, and peers.­­­­

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Master's in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area or a Master's Degree in Nursing; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan. May require certification by the American Nurses' Association in a specialty area.

Candidates must: a) have completed an approved hematology/oncology nurse practitioner program for registered nurses; b) maintain certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and c) qualify for privileges at Michigan State University and Sparrow Hospital.

Description of End Date

This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire, with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

  • TB risk or work within 3 feet of human patients in a health care setting or have potential exposure to animals or to specimens with Mycobacterium.
