Henry Ford Health System Sr Medical Technologist (Nephrology ) - Full Time - Detroit/Days in Detroit, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems. Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as needed. Participates in applied research and development projects to introduce new technology and improved methods.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees and performs routine and complex chemical, cytologic, hematologic, histologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and/or microbiologic procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems. The Sr. Medical Technologist is qualified to perform all duties of the Sr. Medical Technologist job, and in a given job situation may or may not perform all of the duties; actual duties will pertain to the specific Sr. Medical Technologist position.

  • Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems.

  • Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as needed.

  • Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release;

  • Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states;

  • Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.

  • Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical equipment. Assists in the correction of technical problems and serves as a technical resource redirecting the workflow or assignments as necessary to ensure proper coverage and service standards. Following successful completion of competency testing, may perform processing, testing, and result reporting without direct supervision.

  • Teaches and ensures compliance with established divisional, departmental, and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

  • Oversees quality assessment, regulatory, and accrediting requirements. Oversees proficiency testing, quality control, and competency assessment of technical staff. Maintains the laboratory in inspection ready status.

  • Communicates with internal and external customers, including nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers concerning laboratory results, procedures, technology, and related issues. Provides direction, guidance and follow-up for questions and problems referred by the laboratory staff concerning unusual or discrepant results. Communicates with laboratory leadership and vendors as needed to resolve problems and institute improvements.

  • Helps with the evaluation and development of new methods and procedures under the direction of the laboratory supervisor. Evaluates test kits, controls, standards, and changes to work practices. Participates in the correlation checks and employee training necessary for the introduction of new instruments and/or procedures. May perform statistical analysis and draft new procedures.

  • Participates in the instruction (theory and practice) of laboratory science to students, residents and new employees. Attends, participates in, and presents departmental continuing education and in-service programs.

  • Provides input for the preparation of performance appraisals and corrective actions as requested. Assists in maintaining the smooth operation of the laboratory by taking a leadership role as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Completion of accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science.

  • Three (3) years of experience with progressive responsibility in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform, teach, and lead laboratory functions.

  • Vision: Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

  • Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.

  • Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.

  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform job functions.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Regularly exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens, organs and tissues.

  • Regular exposure to electrical equipment, chemicals, odors, changing temperatures, and frequent interruptions.

  • May handle absentee replacement on short notice.

  • May require prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to lift/carry up to 25 lbs.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:

  • Eye and face protection, gown, lab coat, apron, mask, non-sterile medical gloves and utility gloves as required by task or duties.
